Min Hee-jin Wins Defamation Case Against Online Trolls: Court Condemns ‘Insulting Personal Attacks’
Former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin has secured a partial victory in her defamation lawsuit against online trolls who posted malicious comments about her during her public dispute with HYBE.
According to legal sources on March 19, Judge Ahn Hyun-jin of the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of Min in her ₩24 million (approximately $17,200) damages claim against eight individuals, ordering four defendants to pay between ₩50,000-100,000 ($36-72) in compensation.
The court determined that the comments constituted “insulting and contemptuous personal attacks that go beyond the boundaries of simple opinion expression” and were “expressions of abstract judgment or contemptuous emotions that could lower the plaintiff’s social evaluation.”
The lawsuit was dismissed against the remaining four defendants, with the court reasoning that their comments were “relatively minor in insulting or contemptuous meaning and not excessively malicious.”
The legal battle began after Min filed suit in June 2024, seeking ₩3 million ($2,150) from each defendant for mental damages. The online trolls had posted derogatory comments such as “crazy b***h” and other offensive terms on news articles covering the escalating conflict between Min and HYBE.
Min, who created the globally successful girl group NewJeans (now performing under the name NJZ), parted ways with HYBE following a highly publicized dispute over the management of the group. The legal battle between Min and HYBE continues separately from this defamation case.
This ruling marks one of several recent cases in South Korea where entertainment industry figures have successfully pursued legal action against online harassment, reflecting the country’s growing efforts to combat cyberbullying.
