The city of Long Beach has initiated the removal of homeless encampments today, focusing primarily on those blocking access to public spaces such as parks, libraries, and beaches, according to city officials.
Notices posted in the affected areas warned of the impending large-scale removal operation, instructing individuals to clear all personal belongings from the sites by 7 AM. City workers were observed commencing the removal process around 9 AM in targeted park areas.
The city government has stated that homeless individuals refusing to vacate the encampments may face ticketing or arrest.
This action by Long Beach comes in response to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order regarding homeless encampment removal. Newsom has threatened to cut funding for local governments that do not comply with the order, warning of budget reductions as soon as January of next year.
The move highlights the ongoing challenges faced by California cities in addressing homelessness while balancing public space use and safety concerns.
