In the future, the state will charge an additional $24 per month in fixed electricity bills. The new rate policy was approved by state regulators today.
A fixed fee of about $300 will be added per year.
Instead, rates based on power consumption will be reduced from 5 cents to 7 cents per kilowatt hour.
Tenant rights advocates are complaining that the new electricity bill system will result in higher electricity bills for residents who use less electricity.
The change will take effect late next year for customers of Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric. It will take effect in early 2026 for Pacific Gas & Electric customers.
It will not impact customers of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power
